Something’s rotten in the city of Mobile

The city council in Mobile, Alabama, is considering an ordinance that would target MULTIPLE BREEDS, as well as any mix containing a “significant part” of the listed breeds.
The breeds are as follows:
- American Pit Bull Terriers
- American Staffordshire Terriers
- Staffordshire Bull Terriers
- Rottweilers
- Doberman Pinschers
- Chow Chows
- Akitas
- Presa Canarios
- Wolf Dogs/Wolf Hybrids
- Any dogs identified as containing a “significant part” of any of the above breeds.
According to Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis, this isn’t discrimination…it’s “responsible pet ownership.”
This is absolutely discrimination.
Breed-specific legislation (BSL) does not encourage responsible ownership.
On the contrary, major animal welfare organizations, veterinary associations, and legal groups note that it penalizes responsible owners and misplaces the focus away from individual dog behavior.
Multiple large-scale studies show a dog’s breed is a poor predictor of aggressive behavior,
Moreover, decades of empirical evidence confirm that breed-specific legislation fails to reduce dog bite rates or improve public safety.
THE FINAL VOTE ON THIS ORDINANCE IS AUGUST 4, 2026.
It should be noted that news outlets are reporting that the city council DOES NOT want to take a final vote on Aug. 4.
The council wants the public to have additional time to weigh in on the ordinance. The mayor, who obviously knows this is an unpopular proposal, is pushing for the rush vote.
The ordinance was only introduced to the city council on July 28, 2026.
Please reach out to city officials to encourage them to REMOVE the breed-specific language from the proposed ordinance.
